Disposable enemas or micro-enemas with ready-to-use instillation solutions consist of a plastic container with a highly concentrated saline solution (approx. 120 ml), equipped with a rectal cannula. Self-insertion of the short cannula is quite difficult. The introduced liquid must be retained in the rectum for several minutes in order for the influx of fluid into the intestine to take effect. Often, however, the patient is not able to retain the liquid long enough, so the desired effect may not occur. Compared to Reprop, disposable enemas are less effective and, with regular use, more expensive than a reusable enema device.
